Description | California Democratic state Sen. Jenny Oropeza, whose battle with cancer inspired her to become a champion of cancer prevention in the Legislature, died Wednesday night.
Oropeza, who had missed months of work after being diagnosed with an abdominal blood clot, was admitted to Long Beach Memorial Hospital Wednesday evening after complaining of shortness of breath. The 53-year-old Long Beach resident died later that night.
News of her death shocked family, friends and colleagues. Though she was not well enough to travel to Sacramento for this month's budget vote, Oropeza was feeling better and looking forward to returning to the Capitol soon, spokesman Ray Sotero said.
Oropeza, elected to the state Senate in 2006, had battled liver cancer and a tumor during her time in the Assembly. |
