Description | Louisiana Democratic congressional candidate Cedric Richmond is suspending his campaign after the death of his opponent’s father — a move GOP Rep. Anh "Joseph" Cao’s campaign is calling “bizarre.”
Richmond, a state representative who is seeking to unseat the first-term Cao, announced on Thursday he was putting his campaign on hold “until further notice” — a development that came just hours after My Quang Cao, passed away at 78. The elder Cao served as a lieutenant in the South Vietnamese army and was held captive by North Vietnamese soldiers from 1975 to 1982. He had suffered from diabetes and post-traumatic stress disorder.
On Thursday afternoon, Richmond announced in a statement: “I offer my sincere condolences to Joseph Cao and his family during their time of bereavement. As a son who has lost a father, I understand the heartache that comes from such a painful experience. Out of respect to the Cao family, I am suspending my campaign until further notice.”
Richmond’s campaign also canceled a “Women for Richmond” press conference that was slated to be held Thursday. |
