DescriptionPennsylvania House Speaker Matt Ryan, R-Delaware, a powerful force in the Capitol for decades, is lying in a hospital bed in Philadelphia fighting cancer.

Ryan has battled heart ailments for years but always has returned for key legislative battles, timing his rare interventions to bring stability to the House Republicans, who hold the majority.

But as the state and its new Democratic governor prepare to tackle critical issues such as gambling, tax reform and budget woes, Ryan is undergoing chemotherapy treatments to fight the cancer spreading through his body.

Ryan, 70, Pennsylvania's longest-serving speaker, has determinedly told friends, "I'll get better and I'll be back."

One member of the House leadership, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, "It's like everything else: Matt knows what he thinks is right, and he is fighting for it with all his charm and force of will, just like he has on umpteen budgets and thousands of laws. It's hard not to admire someone defying death."
