Description | Republican gubernatorial candidate Rick Scott might be quite confident if the election were left to just the voters in Northwest Florida, a conservative stronghold since the Reagan years.
His Democratic opponent, Alex Sink, has to be thrilled the rest of the state gets a say concerning who will next lead Florida.
In the 2006 governor's race, current Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, then a Republican, easily carried both Escambia and Santa Rosa counties against Democratic challenger Jim Davis. Crist is now running as an independent for the U.S. Senate.
And even though Sink won the 2006 contest for chief financial officer, her Republican opponent, Tom Lee, overwhelmingly carried Escambia and Santa Rosa counties. In Escambia, Sink won only 41 percent of the vote, and in Santa Rosa she won only 31 percent.
