Sen. Knight Sees Law as Threat to Family Unit

| Description | State Sen. Pete Knight recently challenged a law that grants same-sex partners nearly all rights and responsibilities as those of married couples.
However, Superior Court Judge Thomas M. Cecil, denied the senator’s request for a preliminary injunction, which would have prevented the state from putting the law into effect.
Former Gov. Gray Davis signed AB 205, the Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act, into law Sept. 19.
The law would provide registered partners protection in community property, mutual responsibility for debt, parenting rights and obligations such as custody and support and the ability to claim a partner’s body after death.
However, opponents of AB 205, such as Knight said the law violates Proposition 22, which essentially states a marriage is a union only between a man and a woman.
Knight, R-Palmdale, said if AB 205 is allowed to stand, it will ultimately change the definition of marriage in California.
