DescriptionAfter initially declining to debate two Democratic rivals before the March primary in the 12th Congressional District, Rep. Tom Lantos changed his mind on Thursday.

No date has been set for the debate with Rohit Khanna and Maad Abu-Ghazalah, but Lantos' campaign said he believes debate is necessary for a healthy democracy and that Lantos "welcomed the opportunity" to discuss local and national issues.

"There's been some indication of interest in the local media, and he believes it's a good idea to give all the issues that face the people of the district a full airing," said Lynne Weil, Lantos' communications director.

The editorial pages of The San Mateo County Times and the San Mateo Daily Journal have urged Lantos to debate his rivals, and Khanna issued two challenges to the congressman to debate.
