Description | Tom Barrett had it right earlier this year when the Democratic candidate for governor proposed eliminating the offices of secretary of state and state treasurer. We'll see those two offices and raise Barrett one more: lieutenant governor.
The Editorial Board will not make recommendations for these offices this year. We believe that all three should be eliminated and the duties, such as they are, folded into other offices and departments. To do this requires changing the state constitution, which isn't easy, but it would be worth it.
Our view has nothing to do with the current occupants or with the candidates seeking to replace them. It has much to do with the idea of thrift and efficiency. |
