Description | Tony Blair admits in his new memoir that he privately rooted for George W. Bush to beat John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election.
But Blair was not so keen on the bottom of the Republican presidential ticket, saying Vice President Dick Cheney’s views were too hawkish for him.
“It was a huge decision that I don’t think anyone else would have taken,” Blair said of the January 2007 announcement. “He took it. … It worked.”
Blair was the United States’ strongest and most prominent ally in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He paid a grave political price back home for his closeness with Bush and for getting his country entangled in two shooting wars.
During the 2004 election, Blair stayed officially neutral. There was some speculation in the mainstream press that the left-leaning Blair wanted a Democrat in office. That was wrong.
