DescriptionSupporters of once-jailed former Ohio Rep. Jim Traficant are threatening to go to court if he is not allowed onto the ballot as an independent.

The ex-congressman failed to meet Monday’s deadline for running as a write-in candidate to reclaim the seat he once held. His supporters, however, still believe the former congressman is entitled to have his name on the ballot as an independent.

His backers have been challenging the determination of state election officials that Traficant fell 31 signatures short of the required 2,154 signatures to appear on the ballot, arguing that the required total — a figure equivalent to 1 percent of the total number of votes cast in the district in the 2006 gubernatorial race — should actually be lower. Earlier this month, the Trumbull County Board of Elections split over whether Traficant had met the threshold, sending the decision to Brunner.
