Description | President Obama made a new argument last night about growing budget deficits: His deficits are for worthwhile programs.
"Yes, we had to spend money to get us out of what could have been a depression," Obama told Democratic contributors in Miami. "So we spent money on high-speed rail, and we spent money on clean energy, and we spent money making sure teachers and cops and firefighters weren't laid off." (Note, he did not mention health care.)
The president began this discussion by pointing out that predecessor George W. Bush left him with a big deficit "wrapped in a bow waiting for me."
"What did they have to show for the $1.3 trillion deficit that they delivered to us?," Obama asked.
Democrats in the audience offered several suggestions, including "two wars" and "a bad president." |
