(AR) State Treasurer Shoffner Says She Deserves Her Tax-Free 2009 Chevy Tahoe

| Description | "I was not sure that the scuttlebutt over the constitutional officers using state cars could get any crazier but Arkansas State Treasurer Martha Shoffner’s comments to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette (subscription required) this morning has to take the cake.
Shoffner tells the ADG that she is not going to keep a log on her use of the 2009 Chevy Tahoe as is not an 18-wheeler. The Tahoe is a “convenience” for her and therefore is “not income.” And she is upset with the “political posturing” from the other constitutional officers particularly Gov. Beebe who has “a manservant driving him around.” (No word yet how the state police detail charged with protecting the governor feel about being called “manservant.”)
These comments display not only a complete disregarding for the use of taxpayers funds but a lack of understanding of basic accounting principles such as what constitutes income.
The State Treasurer states on her office’s website that her mission is serve the people of Arkansas by handling the “disbursement of their money in the most cost effective manner attainable while maintaining, above all, the highest ethical standards.”
I don’t see how Shoffner’s statements could possible be in line with this mission. The real tragedy is that she is not term limited and is unopposed as the Democratic nominee this year. This means unless she resigns or is removed by Gov. Beebe under Article 15 of the Constitution, she will continue as the State Treasurer until 2014 when she is term limited out." |
