DescriptionNEW ORLEANS --

U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu has thrown her support to State Rep. Cedric Richmond in the race for the Democratic nomination in Louisiana's Second Congressional District.

The announcement comes just a few days before the first televised debate in the race. Richmond, State Rep. Juan LaFonta, Eugene Green and Gary Johnson are vying for the right to appear on the November ballot opposite incumbent U.S. Rep. Joseph Cao.

Cao shocked the political establishment in December 2008, when he unseated William Jefferson, who has since been convicted on federal corruption charges.

The Second District is overwhelmingly Democratic, and the party hopes to reclaim the seat this year. Polls, however, show strong support for Cao, who has toed a moderate line in his 19 months in office and has reached out to traditional Democratic voters.
