Description | TALLAHASSEE - In a potentially devastating blow for Republican Bill McCollum's gubernatorial campaign, a federal appeals court on Friday said McCollum cannot qualify for public funds to match the spending of self-financing rival Rick Scott.
McCollum had been banking on getting a dollar-for-dollar match from taxpayers after Scott exceeds the state's nearly $25 million campaign spending limit. Scott is close to that limit as both candidates gear up for the stretch run before the Aug. 24 primary, a time when campaigns will flood the airwaves to win over voters, many of whom remain undecided.
But in the wake of Friday's ruling, the question becomes: How will McCollum, trailing in the polls, compete with Scott's virtually unlimited bankroll?
