Description"A familiar New Hampshire name has launched a campaign bid for the District 3 Executive Council seat.

Republican Chris Sununu filed election papers Wednesday to challenge two-term Democratic incumbent Beverly Hollingworth of Hampton.

"It's my first run for elected office, but I've been in politics all my life," said Sununu, a Newfields resident who is following in family footsteps.

His father is Republican State Party Chairman John H. Sununu, a three-term governor from 1983 to 1989 who also served as President George H.W. Bush's chief of staff. His brother, John E. Sununu, served three terms as a Republican 1st District Congressman and in the U.S. Senate from 2003 to 2009.

Sununu, 35, is an environmental engineer who owns and manages a business consulting firm in Exeter. He admitted to having a name recognition advantage but said it was his job to campaign well and meet every voter he can in the large and diverse southeastern New Hampshire district that stretches from Dover to Seabrook, from Atkinson to Windham.

He said the Executive Council is a good fit for his "skill set" as an engineer and small-business owner who has written contracts for state projects that were approved by the council as part of its mandate.

"I appreciate the history of the Executive Council. It really is the best political body you could hope for because it's pure check and balances on the executive level," Sununu said. "I want to bring a proactive voice to the governor's ear, no matter which party they belong to."
