Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation today that requires candidates of the same party who are running for governor and lieutenant governor to be jointly nominated at the primary election.

The legislation was passed by the General Assembly after Chicago pawnbroker Scott Lee Cohen won the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in February's primary election, but dropped out after unflattering disclosures about his personal life.

"Illinoisans deserve to have their governor and lieutenant governor working together as a unified team to serve in the best interest of the people," Quinn said in a news release. "By allowing a gubernatorial candidate to choose his or her running mate for lieutenant governor, voters will be able to vote for a team, rather than two completely different individuals."
