Description | A Republican takeover in the Iowa House next year would apply sufficient pressure to force both houses of the Legislature to pass a measure allowing Iowans to vote on a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, Republican candidate for governor Terry Branstad said Thursday.
Democratic leaders in the Senate, who have blocked debate on such a measure, would be forced to take up the issue, even if the Senate stays in their control, Branstad said after a campaign stop in Newton.
“I don’t think the Senate could continue to say, ‘We’re not going to let the people vote on that,’” said Branstad, a former governor who is challenging Gov. Chet Culver, a first-term Democrat.
“I think the House will pass it,” he added in an interview. “I think there will be Democrats that will vote for it in the House. I think the Senate then will have to debate it. And if they do, it will pass.” |
