DescriptionThe Alabama Republican Party has disqualified state Sen. Harri Anne Smith from seeking the party's nomination for a fourth term representing her southeast Alabama district in the state Senate.

The steering committee of the Alabama Republican Party voted Saturday to disqualify Smith because she actively campaigned for Democrat Bobby Bright for the 2nd District seat in Congress in 2008.

Party spokesman Philip Bryan said he could not disclose the vote totals.

Bryan said the only issue the committee considered in its vote was that Smith campaigned for a Democrat while holding office as a Republican.
