DescriptionThe illegal hit piece mailed to Vietnamese voters last week to poison their views of District 5 City Council candidate Magdalena Carrasco is not a new art form for San Jose. Sadly, it follows a tradition of hit pieces exploiting ethnic and racial issues.

It may be impossible to track the mailer's creator to the particular rock under which he or she slithers to hide. But we hope investigators, including the District Attorney's Office, give it a good try. They got some help in that regard Monday, when Richard Hobbs, who lost a 2008 campaign for county supervisor, turned over a nearly identical mailer that targeted him in that race. The fliers had similar mailing labels and used first-class stamps rather than bulk-mail postage, presumably to avoid detection.

The City Council mailer purports to be from Carrasco herself, asking for Vietnamese voters' support in the East San Jose race. But her blurry picture appears next to the Vietnam flag, a flash point for anger and disrespect among many Vietnamese-Americans who despise the communist regime. In claiming to be from her — including the use of her campaign group's full name and Fair Political Practices Commission identification number — the mailer sinks to the lowest of the low.
