Description | "Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner ordered a recount Tuesday of all the ballots cast in Ohio's 18th Congressional District primary, three weeks after Republican state Sen. Bob Gibbs edged out rival Fred Dailey for the GOP nomination there by 156 votes out of 52,700 cast.
The two top Republicans vying for the right to take on Democratic Rep. Zack Space each drew just under 21 percent of the vote in a crowded field of candidates. State law mandates a recount when a winning candidate's margin is less than half a percentage point.
The recount will draw out an already contentious nomination fight between Gibbs, who was endorsed by House Minority Leader John Boehner, and Dailey, who lost to Space by 20 points as the GOP's nominee in 2008. Dailey has refused to concede to Gibbs, the lone elected official running in the primary, until a recount takes place.
Gibbs and Dailey were also competing against several rivals aligned with the tea party movement. One of them, Jeanette Moll, took 19 percent of the vote and might have won if other activist conservatives hadn't divided the vote." |
