DescriptionState Rep. David Segal just announced his candidacy Wednesday, but he's already lining up serious support from progressive activists in the crowded open seat race in Rhode Island’s 1st District.

The Progressive Campaign Change Committee says it will launch a fundraising campaign benefitting Segal, a prominent local blogger and liberal activist who is seeking the Providence-area seat Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) is retiring from after eight terms.

The PCCC will also help to recruit campaign staffers for Segal.

"We see David Segal as a bolder progressive, a stronger fighter for regular working families, and less of a typical political insider than those currently in the race,” said PCCC co-founder Stephanie Taylor. “In an election year where being a longtime political insider is a bad thing and being a bold populist with a record of challenging corporate power is a good thing, we're confident that David's message and grassroots campaign will resonate with voters and get him to victory."

Segal’s entry into the contest comes after progressive supporters launched a campaign on Facebook to draft him into the race.

Segal's path to the nomination is by no means certain, with Providence Mayor David Cicilline and former state Democratic Party Chairman Bill Lynch already in the race ahead of the Sept. 14 primary.
