Description | Politicians and activists today paid tribute to Sir Ludovic Kennedy, the distinguished journalist, broadcaster, author and sometime Liberal Democrat politician, who has died, aged 89.
Sir Ludovic, who had been frail for some time having developed pneumonia after a fall, passed away yesterday at a nursing home in Salisbury.
He made his name as an investigative writer whose campaigns against miscarriages of justice helped to speed the abolition of the death penalty in Britain. But his forensic brain and strong principles led to him to champion many other, often unfashionable causes, including the right to assisted suicide.
Sir Ludovic fell out with Charles Kennedy, then Lib Dem leader, over the issue and quit the party in 2001, but later rejoined. |
