DescriptionWith a new poll showing he’s preferred by more Democrats for governor than three announced Democratic candidates, attorney Geoffrey Fieger said today he’s still thinking about running for governor.

But he has reasons not to.

Fieger, the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for governor in 1998, said he’d have to sacrifice “a whole lot to run,” and said running for political office is a depressing prospect.

“I’ve been there, I’ve done. It’s not something I would wish on a lot of people,” Fieger said in a Free Press interview.

Still, Fieger said he has until 5 p.m. May 11 to turn in the required 15,000 voter signatures to gain a spot on the Aug. 3 primary ballot – a feat he said he could accomplish in a short time by paying petition circulators to collect signatures.

“I’ve been fielding calls all day. I’m too busy,” he said.

Fieger was favored by 28% of Democratic voters in a poll by EPCI/MRA reported Friday by the Free Press and WXYZ-TV (Channel 7). Fieger’s appeal topped House Speaker Andy Dillon of Redford Township (20%), Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero (13%) and Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith (8%). The poll questioned 400 likely Democratic voters.

However, nearly one-third were undecided.
