Description | MONTGOMERY -- Alabama Gov. Bob Riley, in keeping a campaign promise uttered in 2002 while he was still a member of Congress, has given up a portion of his federal salary from that year, according to correspondence obtained by the Mobile Register.
But he decided to send the $14,385 personal check to the state's general fund, rather than the federal treasury.
Riley wrote in a Sept. 23 letter to state Comptroller Bob Childree that the state's fiscal problems demand "that this money stay in Alabama."
