DescriptionOne day after he filed for reelection and put to rest retirement rumors, Budget Committee Chairman John Spratt (D-S.C.) announced he has been diagnosed with early stage Parkinson’s disease but insists it will not inhibit his ability to serve in Congress.

In a statement on his campaign web site, Spratt said that “symptoms are mild and the progression is slow. The chief symptom is an occasional tremor in my right hand, which responds to medication and is mostly a nuisance.”

“None of these symptoms affects me mentally or physically,” said Spratt. “There are many reasons to run again, but I would never consider it if I did not have the energy, motivation, and ability to do this job to the fullest.”

The disclosure came at the end of Spratt’s official reelection announcement. He added that his neurologist, Dr. Mark Stacy, told him “[I]f you are looking for a reason not to run again, this is not it.”
