DescriptionA day after U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh stunned the political world by announcing he would not seek re-election, the notion that he waited until just hours before the signature deadline is bringing about a negative reaction from both Republicans and Democrats.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott told Howey Politics Indiana that Bayh's late move which essentially prevented Democratic primary voters from choosing the next Senate nominee "disenfranchises Hoosier Democrats." McDermott said, "If it's truly an open seat, let us know. Or let us know if it's a done deal."

McDermott said that if it's an open process, he will seek the nomination.
