Schrader praises his party's new focus on spending restraint

| Description | Oregon Congressman Kurt Schrader of Canby says he's happy the big Republican win in the Massachusetts Senate race forced his fellow Democrats to pay more attention to demonstrating they can be fiscally responsible.
When I talked with Schrader in his Capitol Hill office last week he went so far as to call Republican Scott Brown's victory a "a blessing in disguise" in some ways for the Democrats.
"It's very important to show the American people that while they're struggling to pay their bills and make ends meet, the federal government is not just cranking out the money, we're looking at how we're spending your money," said Schrader, a freshman Democrat.
Schrader said he's happy President Obama called for a three-year freeze on domestic discretionary spending, and he says he's in line with Democratic liberals in Congress who would like to extend that freeze to military weapons programs. |
