Harold Ford, upping his rhetoric as he mulls a primary race against U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, broadened his swipes Monday to include Sen. Chuck Schumer - whom Ford labelled a "parakeet" for always echoing Democratic Party orders.

"I believe that both senators should do a better job of putting New York and New York City first," Ford said on Albany's Talk 1300 AM.

"I believe that both senators, including Sen. Gillibrand, ought to be more independent," he added.

Ford added: "Understand that you are not elected to the United States Senate to be a parakeet, or take instructions from the Democratic leadership."
