DescriptionHair products tycoon Farouk Shami said Tuesday that Bill White, his Democratic rival in the race for governor, took jobs from poor Houston residents and gave them to friends.

"He is discriminating," Shami said of the Houston mayor. "He's taking jobs from African-Americans and giving them to his friends...He's a failure and cannot run a city."

White is considered the leading contender in the March 2 Democratic primary for governor.

His campaign spokesperson, Katy Bacon, pointed out that White had twice been elected mayor with strong support from throughout Houston.

"We're not going to respond to all these fabrications," she wrote. "Bill White fights for all the people he represents, that's why he was twice re-elected as mayor with margins averaging 88% and support from people of all backgrounds and all neighborhoods."
