Description | She helped build an empire, but can she rebuild a state?
The latest name being tossed around as a possible contender for the governor's seat -- after Lt. Gov. John Cherry backed out of the race -- is pizza heiress and former sports-team magnate Denise Ilitch.
"Polling has been conducted to test Ilitch's viability in the contest; her considerable personal wealth and lack of a voting record -- she has never run for office before -- is attractive to national Democrats who recognize that the state's economy makes the race an uphill one for them," writes a Washington Post pundit.
It's the second big name to be thrown into the loop for the governor's race. Former Detroit Piston Joe Dumars is said to have been contacted about the position. Like Dumars, Ilitch has not announced her candidacy. |
