DescriptionSimsbury First Selectman Mary Glassman is exploring a run for governor - adding another twist to an already crowded field.

Glassman has a mixture of state and local experience that few of the other candidates have. She served as first selectman of Simsbury throughout the 1990s before leaving to serve under the Gold Dome at the state Capitol.

A Democrat, Glassman worked for the House Democrats under Speaker Moira Lyons and also served the Senate Democrats. She then became chief of staff to then-Lt. Gov. Kevin B. Sullivan, literally sitting in the chair once held by M. Lisa Moody, who has since become the gubernatorial chief of staff.

The Hartford Courant's Rinker Buck broke the story on Glassman's intentions of forming an exploratory committee for governor. The move was a surprise to some because they believed that Glassman was pushing to run for Secretary ofState in a seat vacated by Susan Bysiewicz, who has been leading the Democratic polls in the race for governor.

She will be battling against Bysiewicz, Greenwich multi-millionaire Ned Lamont, former Stamford mayor Dannel Malloy, and former House Speaker James Amann, among others, in a growing field.

Glassman and Malloy were actually quite close in 2006. They ran as runningmates in the August 2006 primary, but something unusual happened. Malloy lost. Glassman won. As such, Glassman became the runningmate in the general election with New Haven Mayor John DeStefano in the race against Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell. They lost that race, and Glassman later ran for first selectman in her hometown of Simsbury and won in 2007. She then won reelection in November 2009.
