DescriptionFormer Gov. Mark Schweiker is endorsing a Republican gubernatorial ticket of Tom Corbett and Jim Cawley, giving Cawley a boost in his bid to win the party’s nomination for Lieutenant Governor.

Schweiker’s endorsement, delivered in a letter obtained by pa2010.com, is expected to be made public by Cawley’s campaign this week. While much of the GOP political establishment is already backing Corbett, Schweiker’s letter serves as more of an endorsement for Cawley, a Bucks County commissioner. Cawley and Chester County Commissioner Carol Aichele are increasingly seen by some southeastern Republicans as the leading candidates to partner with Corbett should he win the top-ticket nomination.

“We must work to give Tom Corbett the best chance at winning the 2010 Governor’s race,” Schweiker writes in the letter, which includes a tag-line indicating it was paid for by Cawley’s campaign. “Jim Cawley gives Tom the best chance. As I see it, Jim’s governing and political experience make him the best candidate for Lieutenant Governor; the geographic and political balance of the Corbett/Cawley team makes them the best ticket. Further, the difference between winning and losing in 2010 may boil down to a few percentage points perhaps making southeastern Pennsylvania key to winning. Including Bucks County’s Jim Cawley might just make the difference in the statewide outcome.”
