Description | Judge Don Johnson says the size of the staff in his court has not changed significantly during its 118-year history. So part-time and overtime are essential parts of his court's annual budget if it is to keep up with a growing caseload.
But a review of part-time and overtime expenses accrued this year in Tippecanoe Superior Court 1 -- including one employee who has made more than $20,000 in overtime this year -- raises questions about that court's heavy reliance on extra help.
Those concerns led members of the Tippecanoe County Council on Tuesday to deny Johnson's request for a transfer of funds within his budget to cover pay for overtime and part-time already worked by his staff.
On Wednesday, Johnson took the rare step of issuing a mandate to require the Tippecanoe County Council to make the money available so his staffers can be paid.
The county council will meet at 7:30 this morning to discuss what to do about the court order. At 8 a.m., the mandate requires council members to report to the judge. |
