Description | Former North Carolina state senator Cal Cunningham, who Democratic strategists view as an up-and-coming candidate, is making plans to run against Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.), according to a senior Democratic operative, reversing his earlier decision to stay out of the Senate race.
Democrats believe Cunningham, as a young, former elected official with a military background, would be the strongest potential Democrat to challenge Burr.
But Cunningham’s reconsideration of the race would set up a contested Democratic primary against Secretary of State Elaine Marshall and attorney Kenneth Lewis for the right to challenge Burr. Marshall would start out as the early frontrunner, given her role as a longtime statewide officeholder, but national Democratic strategists believe Cunningham has more potential as a candidate.
Cunningham’s decision process closely mirrors that of Sen. Kay Hagan, who also initially decided not to run before changing her mind. She handily defeated Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) in last year’s election. |
