Description | As Mayor Tom Barrett dilly-dallies over whether he should run for governor next year, he now must take this into consideration:
The White House badly wants him to enter the race for Wisconsin's top job.
"They want to keep Wisconsin in Democratic hands," said one top adviser to Barrett. "They see Tom as the best way to do that."
Democratic U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold also is running next year and would like a strong candidate at the top of the ticket. He has been encouraging Barrett to run, according to insiders. Democrats in Madison want to maintain control of both houses of the Legislature, particularly with redistricting coming up after the 2010 Census. Many of them are ready to get on board the Barrett bandwagon.
What's more, Jefferson suggested, Doyle will go to great lengths to make sure Lt. Gov. Barb Lawton, the only Democrat in the race, doesn't win. She comes to the contest with a small war chest, few endorsements, little name recognition and none of Doyle's support. |
