Brown lone GOP hopeful for Senate as Burr withdraws

| Description | Bob Burr yesterday withdrew his U.S. Senate bid, leaving state Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham, the lone GOP entry in the race.
Burr, 43, said it became clear to him over the weekend his campaign would be unable to collect the minimum certified voter signatures by today's deadline.
"We weren't going to have the 10,000 necessary to get on the ballot," said Burr.
A selectman from Canton, Burr said he didn't want to put election offices through the trouble of certifying signatures when he knew there wouldn't be enough. The deadline is 5 p.m. today.
Burr declined to say how many signatures his campaign was able to collect since he announced his candidacy last month.
While ending his own campaign, Burr is getting behind Brown.
"I called him first thing," Burr said. "I gave Scott my best wishes and offered my help."
Brown said he appreciated Burr's call.
"He was gracious enough to call, and said he would do everything he could to help me," Brown said. |
