| Description | GOP leader Cox says he won't back Davis recall try -- The top-ranking Republican in the state Assembly said Tuesday he will not support efforts to recall Democratic Gov. Gray Davis. In remarks to the Sacramento Press Club, Assembly Minority Leader Dave Cox said recall plans announced early this month by anti-tax advocates, conservative Republicans and a handful of liberal Democrats will distract state officials from closing a budget shortfall estimated as high as $35 billion and improving California's economy.
