DescriptionThe campaign to replace term-limited Gov. Mark Sanford begins in earnest today when five Republican candidates gather in a debate for the first time at the historic Newberry Opera House.

The scene in Newberry is expected to be colorful, with the various campaigns rallying outside of the Victorian-era opera house before the 7 p.m. kickoff.

All five Republicans currently running for governor, or planning to, are expected at the debate, which is sponsored by the Republican parties of Newberry and Laurens counties.

The candidates are U.S. Rep. Gresham Barrett, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, state Sen. Larry Grooms, state Rep. Nikki Haley and Attorney General Henry McMaster. All have formally announced gubernatorial campaigns, except Bauer, who is expected to do so next month.
