Description | Comptroller Dan Hynes, who is running in the February primary for governor, today became the third major Illinois Democrat in the last month to announce his support for gay marriage rights.
“If two committed adults want to express their love and their commitment to each other through marriage, I believe they should be allowed to under civil law,” Hynes said in an interview.
Hynes used to espouse the “civil unions, yes; gay marriage, no” position of Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. “I've grown to understand the issue better as a result of working with advocacy groups and the GLBT community," he said.
Tuesday, Northwest Side Democratic U.S. Rep Mike Quigley expressed a similar view in announcing his co-sponsorship of legislation to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that enshrined federal discrimination against same-sex couples. |
