DescriptionMike Mahaffey of Montezuma, an attorney who's a former chairman of the Republican Party of Iowa, on Thursday told IowaPolitics.com that he's "far less likely" to enter the 2010 governor's race, now that it appears that former Gov. Terry Branstad will run.

"I would be surprised if he doesn't," said Mahaffey, who hadn't talked to Branstad but said he's known Branstad for a long time and it appears that Branstad is taking steps that show he's very interested in another run.

"With that in mind, I think he's going to be a very formidable opponent in the primary and general election," Mahaffey said, making it "far less likely" that Mahaffey will launch his own bid for governor.

Mahaffey was among about 16 Republicans indicated an interest in running for governor. He said he'd make a decision by Labor Day. There are currently six declared candidates: Sen. Jerry Behn of Boone, Christian Fong of Cedar Rapids, Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley of Chariton, Rep. Christopher Rants of Sioux City, Rep. Rod Roberts of Carroll and Bob Vander Plaats of Sioux City.

While Mahaffey's thoughts were more focused on the governor's race, he said he's "still giving some thought" to running in the 3rd Congressional District in a possible rematch with U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell, D-Des Moines. Mahaffey in 1996 lost to Boswell by only 2 percentage points.
