Description | President Obama has made clear that an immigration reform bill will be ready by the end of this year. What also should be clear is that Democrats see immigration reform beyond a practical issue and political check mark.
Last week, Obama said that legislation to overhaul a broken immigration system would be ready for debate in 2010. We expect this timeline to be firm. We also expect Obama and Democratic leaders to not simply demonstrate their skills at negotiation but to show leadership on an issue that will directly impact millions of families, workers and business owners.
Immigration reform must be sensible and humane. In the same way Obama laid out core principles for health reform, there must also be clear goals and outcomes that Democrats are committed to. Among the pillars of reform must be a path to legalization for undocumented families and an end to the virtual gulag system of immigration detention. These are moral imperatives. |
