Description | Though President Barack Obama’s endeavor to create a public health insurance plan has gone through some changes, opponents say whatever does come out of the current congressional health-care debates could unhelpfully supplant private insurance.
Years ago, when Mr. Obama was an Illinois legislator, doing away with private insurers was his explicit plan. He supported single-payer health care, which would involve all U.S. residents paying taxes to support nationwide government-provided insurance.
As president, Mr. Obama has supported something only negligibly less statist – a public insurance option that the government would fund through taxes for the first decade but that would attempt to sustain itself through premiums when the subsidy ended.
Critics said the public option would enjoy an unfair advantage over even high-quality private insurers and that it would lead many employers to drop coverage of their employees. |
