Description | BATON ROUGE — The head of Louisiana's Democratic Party has filed an ethics complaint charging that U.S. Sen. David Vitter is using public forums funded at taxpayer expense to campaign against potential re-election challenger U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon.
Party Chairman Chris Whittington filed a sworn complaint Thursday with the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics, chaired by Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and asked that the panel investigate his actions.
The complaint is based on Vitter's statements at several taxpayer-funded town halls criticizing U.S. Rep. Charlie Melancon, D-Napoleonville, a potential re-election opponent.
Vitter has said that Melancon supported the health-care revamp legislation proposed by the Obama administration when he actually voted against the measure. His latest statements criticize Melancon for opposing amendments that might have improved the plan. |
