Description | New Orleans Councilman President Arnie Fielkow will introduce legislation today that would ban possession of firearms or weapons in public buildings and within 1,000 feet of recreational facilities.
The proposal comes in the wake of an Aug. 10 drive-by shooting near the New Orleans Recreation Department's St. Bernard Community Center.
The ordinance for first reading would make it illegal for anyone to possess "any weapon or firearm, ammunition or components of firearms or ammunition" in those areas other than a law enforcement officer or any other person authorized to carry weapons.
If passed, those convicted of a violation could be fined $500 and imprisoned for up to six months, the maximum allowed under municipal law. |
