Description | "He is not running for president in 2004. But Al Gore was a dominant figure in the final Democratic presidential debate of the year here on Tuesday, as the candidates questioned — and tried to minimize — the impact Mr. Gore would have on the battle for the Democratic nomination with his surprise endorsement of Howard Dean earlier in the day.
Awkwardly and with obvious discomfort, the candidates — other than Dr. Dean — sought to question Mr. Gore's motives and undermine his influence, without offending a man who remains very popular among many Democrats. And they tried, often with annoyance, to rebut any notion that Dr. Dean had now become the overwhelming favorite to win his party's nomination." |
