Description | After mention as a potential candidate for governor, U.S. senator and attorney general, state Rep. Jim Durkin, R-82nd, of Western Springs, said Friday he will seek re-election to the Illinois House next year.
“I'm happy where I am, I like what I'm doing,” Durkin said.
Though he isn't ruling out a future candidacy for a state position, Durkin said he never considered running for the senate seat in this election, and that rumors of his candidacy stemmed from philosophical disagreements he had with Mark Kirk, R-10th, Highland Park. Kirk will announce his candidacy for U.S. Senate on Monday.
Durkin said the Clean Energy and Security Act, also known as the “cap and trade” bill, was among the issues. Kirk voted in favor of the bill, which would restrict green house gas emissions and require the use of alternative energy in attempt to slow the effects of global warming.
“I was very direct,” Durkin said. “At the beginning of the conversation I said ‘I'm going to be very up front with you.' ”
Durkin said he would have considered running for the attorney general were Lisa Madigan not running for re-election. Last year, Durkin hinted at a run for governor after returning from the Republican National Convention, where he led the Illinois delegation. |
