Description | WASHINGTON — Health care reform was initially stalled by concerns over who would pay for covering millions of the uninsured, but now forces long involved in social issues have jumped vigorously into the debate. c
The most divisive issues of this generation – taxes, deficits, abortion, even euthanasia – have coalesced around President Obama's health care effort. In essence, health care reform has become a fresh proxy for old fights.
Members of Congress are confronting angry constituents in town hall meetings, many of them claiming that Obama's ultimate goal is a government-run plan that would result in rationed care. Defenders of Obama dismiss the protesters as mobs organized by powerful defenders of the status quo and fueled by disinformation. There is evidence of that, but there is also evidence of genuine concern and anger far beyond the machinations of Washington-based interest groups.
Obama argues his plan would not add to the deficit because it would cover the estimated $1 trillion cost over 10 years by squeezing inefficiencies out of the system and raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans.
But three out of four people surveyed by Quinnipiac University in a poll released this week did not believe that Obama could overhaul the health care system without significantly increasing the deficit. |
