DescriptionEAST PROVIDENCE - After spending less than two weeks in East Providence, “Tent City” residents could be facing a type of eviction from state property.

At about 2:30 Thursday afternoon, Rhode Island Sheriffs arrived on scene at Camp Runamuck (as the city is known by its residents) to post notices that a hearing has been scheduled for Friday morning in Rhode Island Superior Court.

The hearing was scheduled after Rhode Island Department of Administration Director Gary S. Sasse and Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Michael A. Lewis filed a complaint with Superior Court seeking a temporary restraining order that if approved, would uphold a state request that camp residents are trespassing and should not be allowed to live or camp on state owned land.

Amy Kempe, a spokesperson for Gov. Donald Carcieri, said the process of serving an undetermined number of Camp Runamuck residents went smoothly. Since there are no records of every resident in “Tent City,” sheriffs could not serve individual summons. Instead, notices of the hearing were placed on cement pilings located throughout the camp.
