DescriptionChinese officials have sealed off a town in rural west-central China with 10,000 residents after a pneumonic plague outbreak killed 3, according to Xinhua news on Monday. An official has said that all the roads leading into and out of the town have been closed. However, the residents are still free to move around inside the town. The official also said that it isn’t clear when the quarantine will end.

A spokeswoman says that the Geneva World Health Organization (WHO) is worried and closely monitoring the situation. Ziketan, the name of the town, is an ethnically Tibetan town, which is located in one of the least populated regions in China.

Officials say that the first victim of the pneumonic plague was a 32-year-old herdsman that died just last Thursday. The second man died on Sunday and was another 37-year-old herdsman, as well as a neighbor of the first. The plague’s third victim was a 64-year-old man. Local health authorities have said that another 10 people have been quarantined, and these were mostly relatives of the 3 who died. However, none of them have developed the signs of the disease, which include coughing and a fever.
