Description | PHOENIX — Arizona is getting $53.7 million over the next five years to help open an additional 92 charter schools in the state.
State School Superintendent Tom Horne said Thursday that Arizona got its first allocation of $14 million from the U.S. Department of Education.
Horne said the rest is guaranteed over the next five years "as long as we are accomplishing our goals."
The main goal, said Horne, is those 92 new charter schools, which would provide "rigorous academic programs" for "at risk" students in inner city and poor rural areas.
Arizona already has about 500 charter schools, which Horne said is the highest number per capita in the nation. But the superintendent said he believes the state can use 92 more. |
