| Description | EDMONTON — The Alberta Green Party won’t be allowed to run any candidates in the next provincial general election or this fall’s Calgary byelection because it is no longer registered as a provincial political party.
Elections Alberta confirmed Wednesday that the party will be officially stricken from the register Thursday for failing to file financial disclosure documents for the 2008 calendar year.
As a result of the de-registration, it will also not be able to fundraise or issue tax receipts, said Elections Alberta spokesman Drew Westwater.
Party officials had been granted an extension of the March 31, 2009 deadline to file the documents, but when they couldn’t meet a new July 1 deadline, they requested that the party be de-registered while it sorted out an internal turmoil.
New party leader Joe Anglin, who was elected in January, said the Greens cannot comply with the Elections Act because members of the previous executive failed to turn over all the financial documents.
He accused party “militants” of deliberately scuttling the party, calling them “a cancer.” |
